Inverclyde Chamber of Commerce is pleased to invite applications to its international trade mission to Colombia, which will take place virtually on June 2nd, 2021.

As Scotland’s first commercial mission to South America, this mission seeks to maximise current opportunities in Colombia for Scottish businesses; to encourage exports of products and services; and to strengthen business links with the South American nation.

Doing business in Colombia

Despite internal security conflicts, Colombia has economic and political stability that has allowed it to maintain steady and stable growth (growth that has never fallen below the 2% threshold since 2001, OECD 2017) and gradually create a business-friendly environment.

It is ranked as 2nd in Latin America for ease of doing business, and it is ahead of India, South Africa, Vietnam and Indonesia internationally (DIT LATAC, 2021).

Colombia has the 4th largest economy and the 3rd largest population in Latin America (World Bank, 2019), with a population of almost 50 million with rising incomes and a growing middle-class with more buying power than ever before, making it an attractive emerging economy and strong market for British exports.

It boasts a young, skilled and competitive workforce, a booming tourism sector and a number of free trade agreements with various countries. The banking and financial systems are generally sound, independent and robust. Total trade in goods and services between the UK and Colombia was £1.3 billion in the year ending June 2018 (ONS, 2019).

The geographical position of the country is a strategic point between the different markets of the region but also with southeast Asia.
